A good coach is half of a good team

By Penny Lett, Chilliwack Progress

Joining the clientele of Coaching with Cathy and hiring Cathy Clark as your personal, one to one, lifestyle coach, is like gifting yourself with a sounding board, a guidance counselor, and a fan club - all in one! Ms. Clark is the one-man-band behind the year-old service that seeks to help people make positive changes in their lives. Complete academic degrees. Lose weight. Change jobs. Form new habits. Understand relationships.

"I often see myself as a 'farmer' who is sewing the seeds of success," says the Coach Training Alliance graduate. "Of course I can do the 'planting' but only the client can ensure the seed grows."

As well as her formal training, Ms. Clark has had six years of on-the-job training through coaching as a volunteer. She served with Victim Services and with the Chilliwack Hospice Society's palliative care program. She also did duty supporting prisoners' families.

These days, she divides her professional time between working in the prison system giving Alternative to Violence Programs (AVP) workshops - and at home, running Coaching with Cathy.

"I hired a personal coach while I took coach training," notes Ms. Clark. "And I found her very helpful."

Personal coaches help clients become focused. They become an accountability partner and an impartial listener.

Coaching with Cathy asks for a three-month commitment. Sessions are done over the phone with Ms. Clark calling the client at the prearranged date and time.

"I hope people learn to see a problem as a circumstance…we brainstorm together and the client him- or herself comes to realize he or she can find all the answers and, with those answers, can change the circumstance," she outlines. "I encourage my clients, and encouragement empowers anyone."

Coaching with Cathy clients set three goals each week. They learn the difference between 'need' and 'want', and learn to work from positives. They become not only seekers, but finders.

In the 13, 45-minute sessions clients review the previous week's goals and are assigned action challenges such as positive self-talk or journalizing the things for which they are grateful each day.

"Putting thoughts on paper ensures that the writers becomes focused, and focus itself is empowering," says Ms. Clark. "Empowerment gives a sense of success and, as everyone knows, success breeds success." Still dealing only in positives, Ms. Clark teaches clients to not change bad habits, but rater to add new, good habits. If they do that, the old, bad habit will simply drop away.

Together, she and her clients set goals by time and date. They're careful however, to set goals that can be accomplished.

"Coaching with Cathy is filling a niche that should have been filled as people grew up," Ms. Clark believes. "It's about learning life skills and developing the ability to focus."

She follows the all-important 'Law of Allowing,' She allows clients to walk their own path. She doesn't 'fix' them.

"I'm not empowering anyone if I 'fix' a problem." Concludes Ms. Clark. "And successful personal coaching is always about empowering."
