In the NewsBeing Attached to OutcomeMy in-laws were thinking of going to a movie the other night. They thought they'd like to see the Pink Panther movie, with Steve Martin. But their friends talked them out of it in a minute. Why? Because they had seen it and said "it was nothing like the ones that Peter Sellers used to star in". See, the friends went to the new movie, completely expecting it to be exactly like the original ones. What a disappointment, when they watched the Steve Martin version. A perfect example of being attached to the outcome. Another story comes to mind of old Mr. C. For many years Mr. C was always seen driving around town in his beloved Lincoln. Actually, he had bought several over the years. One day he decided it was time to purchase a new car. He chose a shiny new Cadillac instead. About two weeks later, one of his employees asked, Mr. C "how do you like your beautiful new car"? He answered, "ok, I guess, but it sure doesn't drive like a Lincoln". Well, Mr. C that's because it's a Caddy !! Don't expect one thing to be something else ! Allow it to be what it is. I have my own short story to illustrate the point : NOT being attached ... Quite a few years ago, when the commuter train , The West Coast Express was brand new, they had a promotional day scheduled. It was near Christmas, so to bring shoppers into downtown Vancouver, and experience the new train for free, all you had to do was bring a big teddy bear for the Kids Hospital. A dear friend and I made plans to go. With bears in hand we took our seats. All I knew that it would take us about an hour to reach our destination, while the West Coast Express followed along the Fraser River. Yet, I had no idea , nor expectation, of what the trip would really look like. I simply was up for an adventure. I can remember being amazed at all that I saw; that seemed so completely different than any trip by car to Vancouver. But then, I didn't expect it too !Even all the small towns along the way appeared novel. Before long we pulled into the train station. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the trip, ready to head out to the shops for a day in the Big City. I believe I had enjoyed the ride so much because I had no pre planned agenda as to how it was going to end up. I allowed it to be what it was. By doing so, I attracted this rich experience to myself. This memory is such a good one, it is still with me today! So what's the danger in being attached to outcome? Simply put-- it sets you up for disappointment every time! And the degree of disappointment is reflected as to how exact the outcome must be to you. Let go, and allow for a flow to happen. On the day of the train trip, I did however set an intention. Point to Practice: The next time you have something to do, that may be new or even familiar to you, set your intention, yet don't be attached to any particular outcome.
