M = Motivation & Momentum

M = Motivation & Momentum

Jane is very aware that today marks the beginning of the second week of nothing. That’s right.

No thing. There is no get up and go- there seems to be nothing that is motivating her to get to the job of writing her paper on Climate Models. You see, Jane is an anthropologist, who spent about seven years embedded within the "tribe" of climate modelers at the National Center for Atmospheric Research. She is presently a research scientist, and for the last several years she has been conducting fieldwork in Brazil. So, why, then can’t she get going? This paper must be complete by the end of the month.

Ok, so we all have days that we notice we have no motivation. That empty feeling. At times, if it goes on long enough, the energy vampires come out in full force. We don’t have energy for anything.
So, what to do? Where do we ‘get’ motivation? Can you even ‘get motivation from others? So many questions.

Actually motivation is an inside job. No one else really does our motivating for us. We certainly can be inspired by others, and that in turn can fire us up inside- which in turn is where motivation begins; with us and our feelings. When I say inside job, that is directly connected to feelings we have. Jane’s issue at present is her focus on the lack of energy she has. It is a distinct awareness of the lack of God-energy in our lives. All the low energy feelings are running rampant, and have knocked Jane down. It’s amazing the angst we cause ourselves when we hesitate and hold back from beginning something – like in Jane’s case; even when it's a positive 'something'.

Squash negative thoughts; replace them with positive ones. Along those lines, it’s important to start monitoring your thoughts. Recognize negative self-talk, which is really what’s causing your slump. Just spend a few days becoming aware of every negative thought. Then, after a few days, work at squashing those negative thoughts like a bug, and then replacing them with a contrasting positive thought.
Squash, “This is too hard!” and replace it with, “I can do this! Here I go”.

In addition, make an effort to be with other positive thinkers- again they can inspire you.

Ok so back to our Jane in a slump for a moment. Setting her timer for just 15 minutes and being fully present to write something for her paper, is the best step she can take. Now, following that time, she has completed that first step to success she can pat herself on the back for. In that moment she is aware of how good that feels and new found energy floods in. Before she knows it, she’s writing up a storm, going the distance, feeling all the goodness and energy (God-energy). The feeling of being connected with something ‘larger’ is back, the pursuit of wanting more of that feeling is taking hold. We can say momentum has begun.

All we have to do is start, like Jane did. Bust out of the slump. Begin with a positive talk to yourself about taking the first step- and you’ll be back in the groove in no time. And maybe your issue you have a need for motivation is for something quite different than Jane. Is it exercise, food, job search, tax prep (!) or you name it !
